1920 - Pacific Lumber Company establishes a resort/retreat
for the management and employees of Pacific Lumber Company.
They came here to play golf and enjoy the sunny weather.
1921
- A grove of ancient trees is purchased by Save the Redwoods League
with funds from the Whittemore Family and dedicated to Harris M. Whittemore.
This is the 21st grove out of 900 to be purchased by SRL over the next
80 years on the north coast.
Winter
of 1964 - Slide from logged slope takes out the bridge over the Eel
River.
1978
- THP 1–78-344 This PL THP removed 70% of the tree volume
on the entire property.
December
20, 1981 - 780,000 cubic yard landslide from PL harvest area blocks
river and damages property causing emergency evacuation of 200 residents.
1982
- Lawsuit filed by residents damaged by 1981 landslide.
1986
- PL settles out of court with Redway residents for $320,000.
November
27, 1989 - THP1-89-841 is filed (and operated in 1990) on the northwest
slopes behind the town of Redway.
Winter
of 1994 - The site of a 1990 harvest plan becomes the site of the
Million Dollar Slide to the northwest of Redway.
February
2, 1996 - THP1-96-036 is filed by Pacific Lumber Company – Stable
Slopes is founded.
April
1996 - Stable Slopes begins meetings (May, July, August) with PL management
over issues including acquisition of PL holdings that include THP
1-96-036 on the Redway Ridge with Mediation from UC Ag advisor Kim
Rodriguez.
July
21, 1996 - Stable Slopes Field trip with Geologists Kojan and PL’s Tim
Best.
July
30, 1996 - Dr Kojan releases his final report of slope instability.
October
1996 - CDF approves THP1-96-036 - Redway Forest Defense is founded.
November
15, 1996 - lawsuit is filed by Redway Forest Defense and Richard Gienger.
June
23, 1997 - RFD goes to Court, with Sharon Duggan, Jay Moller, and Richard
Gienger.
September
23, 1997 - Decision RFD wins! - Petition for Writ of Mandate
is granted. We won because CDF failed to consider cumulative
impacts and alternatives.
November
1999 - Notice of intent to harvest is sent by PL to neighboring water
users. Field trip takes place with local Ruby Valley residents, Richard
Gienger and PL’s forester Brian Talbert RPF to look at water source
issues.
February
7, 2000 - THP 1-00-044 is filed Stable Slopes starts requesting meetings
with PL management. PL refuses to meet with community representatives.
October
2000 - THP 1-00-044 is approved by CDF.
November
2000 - A lawsuit - Redway Forest Defense and Richard Gienger
v Pacific Lumber and CDF - is filed in Humboldt County Superior Court.
January
3, 2001 - PL, CDF / RFD required settlement negotiations begin.
January
24th - Settlement Agreement to create Redway Forestry Council w/PL
is signed by all parties. Lawsuit - Redway Forest Defense and Richard
Gienger v CDF and PL, is dropped.
March
29 2001 - Redway Forestry Council meets to start negotiations, discuss
ground rules and outline goals w/PL's Resource Manager Craig Anthony
and RPF Brian Talbert.
April
7, 2001 - RFC w/PL's Brian Talbert go on field trip to THP 044 Harvest
areas with mass wasting potential.
April
11, 2001 - RFC meeting includes presentation regarding conservation
easements from Amy Chestnut of Pacific Forest Trust. John Campbell attends
with Craig Anthony and Brian Talbert. PL is unofficially open
to offers.
April
25, 2001 - RFC meets w/PL.
May
3, 2001 - Town Hall meeting called by Stable Slopes Forever! puts
RFC and PL on the spot. 75 attended - all agreed - PL out of
So Hum, sooner the better. Craig Anthony officially invites
a proposal from the community.
May
28, 2001 - Field Trip to establish areas of skyline in jeopardy -
It's much worse than we thought. Harvest units are bigger and
stretch across most beautiful parts of skyline. We located and
measured old growth trees to get volume estimates. PL voluntarily
turns over their volume estimates to us on the skyline units
for our proposal estimates and efforts.
May
31, 2001 - RFC only, meets to start draft proposal scenarios
and outline process for public participation in proposal process.
June
15, 2001 - Proposed options are released and distributed in public places
and local newspapers. A mailing goes out to all boxholders in Redway
& Garberville. RFC is starting to take comments by phone,
mail, and e-mail.
July
16, 2001 - Town Hall Meeting to get input on proposed options. 100 attended.
Overwhelming majority of people vote for acquisition over easement.
August
1, 2001 - Close of public comment on proposed options.
August
2, 2001 - RFC meets with Stable Slopes to pool all responses and discuss
results and next steps.
October
1, 2001 - Community proposal for purchase of option is delivered to
PL.
October
5, 2001 - Jared Carter of PL responds to Proposal.
October
16, 2001 - Stable Slopes and RFC answer Jared letter and urge a meeting.
October
26, 2001 Three SSF! representatives attend a CA State Park Commissioners
meeting in Eureka, CA. Direct contact is made with Park Commissioners,
Directors, and Kate Anderton of Save the Redwoods League.
December
2001 - Department of Parks & Rec's North Coast Redwoods District
Superintendent John Kolb makes his recommendation to the department's
acquisition section encouraging purchase of the PL property.
Winter
2001- 2002 Discussions continue with Save the Redwoods League, Trust
for Public Lands, Pacific Forest Trust, CA Parks & Recreation, and
others for appropriate action to protect ridge.
March
5, 2002 California voters pass Proposition 40 by 56.8 percent, the 2.6
billion dollar "California Clean Water, Clean Air, Safe Neighborhood
Parks, and Coastal Protection Act of 2002" (2002 Resources Bond).
The passage of Proposition 40 provides funds for local assistance grants.
April
2002 - Pacific Lumber Company officially states that they are a willing
seller of the 581 acres.
April
2002 through April 2003 Discussions between Save the Redwoods League,
CA Parks Department, and Pacific Lumber Company continue regarding Parks
acquisition of the Ridge.
April
2003 CA Public Works Department investigates ridge property for possible
approval of acquisition.
May
2003 CA Public Works Department approves land for purchase with SSF!
promising to help Parks clean up left over trash and abandoned house
on property.
May
2003 CA Parks Department with funding from Prop 40 purchases 581 acres
from Pacific Lumber Company for 2.4 million.
